I obtained more than a hundred LPs in this way, endless entertainment and learning and all for doing something I loved. A set of sleeve notes was worth £25 but, if I took the value in albums, each one cost a pound. Irish Jubilee was issued first by Mercier Press, Cork who had published FSSU and afterwards, with revised notes, by Topic of London. It also caused me to refine my ideas of what the tradition was about. I knew less than people thought but the work involved in doing the job properly gave me much needed experience in research and writing. By that time I had acquired a reputation for a wide ranging knowledge of songs and singers and he asked me to write the sleeve notes. At about the same time he and Cathal McConnell made an LP together “An Irish Jubilee ” and Robin began recording traditional singers and musicians, first Kevin Mitchell “Free and Easy ” and then Geordie Hanna and his sister, Sarah Ann O’Neill “On the Shores of Lough Neagh “. Following his publication of Folk Songs Sung in Ulster, Robin Morton issued two volumes of recordings selected from those transcribed for the book.
